NIKUHITSU (Autograph Paintings).

It was towards his closing years or from the beginning of the Kayei era (1848-'53) that Hiroshige began to try brush paintings. Excepting No. 285, which was produced in the middle of the Tempō era, all the pictures displayed in the exhibition were painted in those days. From about the period of Kayei onwards, Hiroshige signed his productions as simply japanese text (Ryūsai) or japanese text (Ryūsai-Hiroshige) instead of japanese text (Ichiryūsai-Hiroshige). The kakemono is a picture mounted for hanging on the wall of tokonoma or alcove. It is kept in the form of a roll.
